Fight Against COVID-19: Seniors vs. Pets

Fight Against COVID-19: Seniors vs. Pets

Many studies have shown that having pets as a companion can help with the improvement of ones’ health condition. Health professionals at home health care Brooklyn, New York, agree that pets also play a big role when achieving the patients’ overall wellness. However, in this critical time, it is heartbreaking to hear that even domestic animals are already prone to getting the coronavirus.

In a report posted on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s official website, it was announced by the authorities that first confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in two pet cats. These are the first pets in the United States to test positive. The cats live in two separate areas of New York state – both had mild respiratory illness and are expected to make a full recovery.

Although many caregivers in New York agree that pets are a big help when it comes to improving ones’ health, this time, they are advising pet lovers all over the world to take precautionary measures to ensure seniors are far from getting the virus, as well.

In the meantime, public health officials are still learning about the Coronavirus. Until further information, CDC recommends the following:

  • Do not let pets interact with people or other animals outside the household.
  • Keep cats indoors when possible to prevent them from interacting with other animals or people.
  • Walk dogs on a leash, maintain at least 6 feet from other people and animals.
  • Avoid dog parks or public places where a large number of people and dogs gather.
